The village of Plainfield is located approximately 47 miles southwest of the Chicago "Loop" in suburban Will and Kendall county. .

Plainfield is the oldest community in Will county. Located within the Village are neo-Gothic churches, upright wing cottages, a school built in 1847, and a number of late-19th-century homes. The village is the fastest growing in Will county. Plainfield had a total population of 40,466 estimated as of 2012, The land area of the Village is 12.4 square miles.

Plainfield enjoys a strong, proficient economy. Hundreds of retail businesses enhance the community's employment opportunities and help to balance the economy. Downtown Plainfield offers local shopping on Lockport Street, home to dozens of assorted stores including hardware, auto supplies, antiques & collectibles, fine art, sporting goods, floral and more. Close by are both Westfield Shoppingtown and Westfield ShoppingtownLouis Joliet Mall.

Plainfield's municipal neighbors include Naperville and Bolingbrook to the north, Romeoville to the east , Joliet to the south, and unincorporated Kendall County to the west. Transportation links include U.S. Route's 59, 126 and 30. The I-55 expressway passes on the eastern edge of the village. Commuter train service to Chicago is available in downtown Joliet. O'Hare International Airport is approximately 41 miles from the village.
